16 young people from Portadown, Northern Ireland visit Woodberry Down for the second part of their exchange with MHDT and The Edge.

In February Manor House Development Trust and Young Hackney teamed up to take 16 young people from The Edge Youth Hub on a residential to Northern Ireland. Click here to read more about the first part of the programme.

Now for the second part of the programme, we have hosted our partner The Oasis Youth Club‘s in a week of learning and fun for all 32 young people! The project has been funded by Young Hackney, Manor House PACT and Genesis Housing Association.

On their first day Young People started with a tour of Hackney followed by a talk about Youth provision in our borough with key speakers from Young Hackney. The day ended with all 32 young people going back to The Edge Youth Club and enjoying a tasty meal together. On their second day Oasis got a taste of London through a tour of the city and an evening in the West End Theatre! Young people from the Edge have joined in the tour and showed the city from their perspective.

Una Hendron, 16, from Portadown said:

It was so busy and there were so many people. I have never experienced being amongst so many people at one time.

The main event of the project started on Wednesday as the group travelled to Whitemoor Lakes in Staffordshire for two nights for a series of collective workshops. The aim of these workshops were to develop team cohesion and explore the concepts of identity, courage, empathy, resilience and self confidence.

Denzel Asiedubouh, 16, from Manor House said:

I wish the trip could have been longer. I’m going to miss everyone from Oasis, we have to do another residential together.

Alex Purdy, 17, from Portadown said:

This week was so much fun. The workshops and activities that we took part in on this trip really helped me to learn a lot more about myself and my identity.

During the evaluation of the programme, young people from both groups came up with ideas for new themes and locations for the future of this partnership. Stay connected to find out more about the project’s impact assessment and a video relating their experience!
