The Woodberry Down Young Hackney Centre, originally called Parkside, was opened in….

By 2010, Parkside had been hit by numerous problems including long-term staff sickness, budget constraints, faulty infrastructure and staff changes, which led to the centre being repeatedly closed. As a result, the centre’s reputation suffered and local youth groups were discouraged to work there.

In 2010, the MHDT Board put forward recommendations for the future of Parkside. We lobbied Councillors to keep the centre open and commit more resources to it.

In 2011/12, planning was agreed for Parkside to be replaced by a new centre. During the construction, we provided alternative space to host local youth activities. Through our continued discussions with the NE Youth Provider Network and Young Hackney, we helped to ensure the new centre was run more transparently, with a local steering group formed and far more interaction and accountability to residents.

The new centre, The Edge, officially opened in April 2013. It offers young people aged 8-19 years activities such as table tennis, pool, snooker, cooking, football, boxing, dance arts and crafts, video and TV, group work and trips out.
