The Healthy Spaces Growbag scheme was set up on vacant site following the demolition of Pewsham House, one of the original blocks of flats at Woodberry Down.
It was funded as part of the Well London project, with the aim of enabling local people to grow food on their doorstep, with the added positive impact on their mental well-being.
This was a temporary site and when the land was needed as part of the next phase of the regeneration scheme, in early 2011, the project moved location and became The Woodberry Down Community Garden.
The Community Garden is located by the New River at Newnton Close, overlooking the East Reservoir, and provides a quiet oasis for local residents along with – excuse the pun – a growing sense of community. There are growbags for them to grow their own food, and a wildlife meadow to promote local bio-diversity. The Community Garden now runs independently, with its own committee. Members have a key to the gate, and visitors can have a look around when accompanied by a member.
